McGuire: “It is past time to sit together as reasonable and compassionate human beings and discuss solutions.”
Des Moines, IA – Gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Andy McGuire issued the following statement on the most recent mass shooting in Las Vegas earlier this week
“Each day that lawmakers fail to address common-sense gun reform, they empower the perpetrators of future mass shootings and disrespect the memories of past victims of gun violence and their families.
“I support and believe in the 2nd amendment. I also believe Americans should be able to attend their favorite concert and watch the newest blockbuster in a movie theatre without fear of losing their lives. I believe parents should be able to drop their children off at school without worrying about their safety. And I believe our veterans, who fought with valor, deserve more than to be gunned down as civilians in the country they served to defend.
“As a society, we cannot continue to ignore our country’s gun violence epidemic that knows no boundaries. This is not a partisan issue. This is a code red domestic security threat. I ask all lawmakers, including those in Iowa, to take out their moral compass, and ask themselves a very important question–What do they value more, millions of dollars in campaign contributions or American lives?
“It is past time to sit together as reasonable and compassionate human beings and discuss solutions. This is about guns and mental illness – both public health epidemics in our country and both taking lives at an unbearable pace. As a doctor, I know that studying these epidemics and taking action will bring change. And as a candidate for office, I also know it will take political courage and the willingness to work together to come up with the right solutions. I am confident we can. After all, we live in the greatest country in the world, with everyday heroes who show us their courage in the most difficult circumstances. The least we can do is show them their bravery is not laid to waste. Let us show them ours.”
