“I not only believe that diversity is one of our greatest strengths, but it is the key to progress, innovation and achieving the common goal of making Iowa a better place to live for everyone.”
Des Moines, IA–On the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 15th, 2018, Iowa Democratic Gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Andy McGuire issued the following statement:
“Today, we honor and remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We must never forget his lessons of compassion, empathy and the importance of community. Dr. King peacefully and courageously stood up against bigotry and hate at one of the most tumultuous times in our nation’s history. His efforts not only spurred the victories of the civil rights movement but also laid the groundwork and paved the way for future battles against injustice and inequality.
“Sadly, there are still leaders in Iowa who believe diversity is not our greatest strength. I totally and wholeheartedly disagree and will fight against all those who wish to divide us and pit neighbors against one another.
”Let this be a day of service to honor our past successes and shed light on the obstacles that remain. The best way to honor Dr. King’s memory is to tackle our nation’s racial divide through communication and cooperation, not hate speech and violence. I not only believe that diversity is one of our greatest strengths, but it is the key to progress, innovation and achieving the common goal of making Iowa a better place to live for everyone.”
