Dr. Andy McGuire: “Gov. Reynolds continues to lead the charge against women’s access to affordable health care. It’s wrong. It’s unhealthy. It’s bad for our state.”
Des Moines, IA – In response to today’s news that more women in Iowa will be denied access to much-needed health care, family planning and cancer screenings, Democratic candidate for Governor, Dr. Andy McGuire, released the following statement:
“Sadly, Gov. Reynolds slammed another door shut for women and their health care options today. Yet another Planned Parenthood closure sends a strong message to women all across Iowa that Gov.Reynolds does not value the wellness of her constituents.
“It is difficult to watch on the sidelines while Gov. Reynolds continues to lead the charge against women’s access to affordable health care. It’s wrong. It’s unhealthy. It’s bad for our state and will only lead to more unplanned pregnancies.
“This is absolutely inexcusable, and Iowans deserve a governor who will prioritize their well being. That is why as governor, I will work to restore funding to Planned Parenthood on day one.”
Background: On Friday, the only remaining Planned Parenthood clinic in the Quad Cities will close its doors. This comes after the Branstad/Reynolds administration defunded the organization this past Spring.
McGuire was born in Waterloo, Iowa – the daughter of a World War II veteran and a hard-working mother in a family of eight. McGuire is the mother of seven children, and raised a family while training to be a doctor. As a medical director, she focused on preventive care, including vaccinations and prenatal checks.
